Late Friday football roundup: Spencer wins third straight
MACON, Ga. -- Spencer won its third straight game Friday night with an 18-0 victory over Rutland at Ed Defore Sports Complex.
The victory gave Spencer a 4-3 record overall and 3-2 in Region 2-AAA. The Greenwave is tied with Central-Macon for fourth place in the region. But Central owns the tiebreaker, so the Greenwave must finish ahead of Central to earn a playoff berth.
Peach County leads the region at 5-1 with Westside-Macon and Jackson tied at 4-1.
Spencer, which has games left against Westside, Jordan and Kendrick, is two wins away from a winning season, which would be the first for the program since 1977.HEARD COUNTY 35, MANCHESTER 21
FRANKLIN, Ga. -- A touchdown with two seconds to go in the first half gave the Heard County High School football team a lead it would not give up in a 35-21 Region 5-AA victory against Manchester on Friday night.
The Braves (4-3, 2-0 were at home for the first time in a month and made the most of a return to Staples Stadium. With the game tied at 14-all, Emory Jones was able to connect with Jaden Moreland for the touchdown and Heard County would put it away in the second half.
Manchester (4-3, 1-1) scored first to take a 7-0 lead, but the Braves tied it as Austin Barron scored his first of four touchdowns on the night late in the first quarter.
Next it was Austin Barron scoring and then Manchester answering to tie the game at 14-all with just about two minutes left in the half. The last-second touchdown would start a string of 21 straight points, as Austin Barron would score two more times with one in the third and a 15-yard catch from Jones late in the fourth.
With 1:41 left the Blue Devils would add a long touchdown, but the onside kick attempt was recovered by Heard County and the Braves would run out the clock.
Manchester plays at Bremen on Friday.

BREMEN, Ga. -- A pair of Region 5-AA ball clubs that have put some big offensive numbers on the scoreboard during the 2015 season found themselves in a defensive struggle Friday night.
And in the end, Bremen battled its way to a 7-6 region victory over visiting Chattahoochee County to deliver its fourth win in a row, and more importantly, improve to 2-0 in the region.
The Panthers (2-5, 0-2) took the 6-0 lead in the opening quarter, but missed the extra point, which would come back to prove huge in the overall outcome, and the Blue Devils (4-3, 2-0) were able to get on the board late in the first half to take the lead and momentum into the locker room.
Getting the ball back late in the second quarter, Bremen drove the ball 80 yards and scored on a Dylan Kierbow quarterback counter just before the half.
ChattCo plays host to Temple on Friday.

SEALE, Ala. -- Park Crossing (8-1, 6-0) clinched the Class 6A Region 2 championship with the win.
Russell County (0-8, 0-6) has lost 20 straight games.
