Carver remains unbeaten in region with win over Shaw
Carver's bend-but-don't-break defense forced four turnovers, and Jawon Pass ran for two touchdowns and passed for another as the Tigers remained tied for first place in Region 1-AAAAA with a 33-22 victory over Shaw Saturday night at Kinnett Stadium.
The win improved the Tigers to 3-0 to tie Northside for first place in the region, and they are 6-1 overall.
The Raiders fell to 4-4 and 2-2 in the region.
Linebacker Richard Cummings and defensive back Jacobie Hatchett were Carver's playmakers on defense.
Cummings had two interceptions and Hatchett had one interception and a fumble recovery in the end zone to pace the Tiger defense.
The Raiders took the opening kickoff and drove 55 yards to the 18 when the Carver defense stiffened and got the ball back on downs.
It was short-lived, as Shaw's Eugene Moseley intercepted Pass on his first pass of the game, and three plays later Shaw was ahead 7-0 on B.J. Knight's 13 yard TD run.
Carver came back and scored the next 26 points of the game to lead 26-7 at the half.
After Shaw scored, Pass drove the Tigers down the field and got the final 16 yards himself on a 16-yard run to make it 7-6.
Cummings then but the Tigers back in business when he intercepted a Knight throw.
Pass then did it again, this time on an exciting 25-yard run that looked like he was going to be sacked and turned it into a TD.
Knight was intercepted again on the next series by Hatchett, and the Tigers were first-and-goal at the 5-yard line on his 50-yard return. One play, a Darius Love run and a two-point run by Love made it 20-7.
Shaw then drove down to the 5-yard line, and Hatchett recovered a fumble in the end zone after a completed pass at the 1-yard line by Knight, and another Raider drive was thwarted.
Pass then threw to a wide-open Jacoby Cunningham after the fumble recovery with 1:51 before halftime, and the Tigers were ahead 26-7.
Shaw again drove down the field, but time expired at the half with the Raiders on the 7-yeard line.
Shaw actually outgained Carver in the first half 206 yards to 177, but the Tigers had the points on the board.
In the second half, it was more frustration for the Raiders as a Knight TD pass was nullified because he was past the line of scrimmage and the Tigers again took over on the 15.
They drove 85 yards and ate up the rest of the third period with Ja'Quaze Gaines scoring the TD in the 4th to make it 33-7.
Knight made it interesting in the fourth as he passed for two touchdowns, both to Cameron Paulding, one for 15 yards and another for 28. Again Cummings got into the act and intercepted another Knight pass to end the rally.
For the game, Knight had 17 completions on 37 attempts for 215 yards and two TD's but three big interceptions. Sydarrian Cobb also had a big game as he ran for 103 yards on 22 tries.
Pass for the Tigers ran for 82 yards and passed for 92. He accounted for three scores as Carver used seven different backs in their run game, which amassed 240 yards.
