Central stopped on 1 in loss at Enterprise
ENTERPRISE, Ala. -- Central quarterback Quan Weaver was stopped on a fourth-and-goal from the Enterprise 1-yard line with 23 seconds left as the Red Devils fell 17-14 to Enterprise on Thursday night.
Central could have kicked a field goal to force overtime, but the Red Devils went for the win in regulation.
Enterprise had taken the three-point lead on a 26-yard field goal by Hunter Nicholson with 3:19 left in the game. That field goal was set up when Central's punt receiver had the ball bounce off his foot.
That was one of multiple miscues by the Red Devils in the second half.
Earlier, Weaver had a pass deflect off a receiver and Marcus Jones picked it off and returned it 36 yards to the Central 2. Central appeared to force a fumble on first down, but the referees ruled that Cincere Flowers was stopped before the ball came out.
Flowers eventually scored from the 1 to tie the game at 14-14.
Both teams scored in the first quarter on big runs. Tavis Anderson scored from 52 yards away for Enterprise. Weaver answered with a 46-yard run less than 2 minutes later.
Central took the lead in the third quarter when Weaver hit Jamal Couch for an 8-yard TD pass.
Central, which had already wrapped up the Class 7A Region 2 championship, finishes the regular season 7-3. Enterprise, which won its third straight game, earned a playoff berth with the win.Thursday at EnterpriseCentral 7 0 7 0--14
