Carver clinches playoff berth with win over Harris County
HAMILTON, Ga. -- Harris County led Carver 14-13 with 6:28 remaining in the first half Friday night at Tiger Stadium, before Carver exploded for 33 unanswered points on the way to a 46-14 playoff-clinching win.
Harris County took the opening possession and drove to the Carver 27-yard line before failing on 4th and 1.
Carver had a penalty on its first offensive play before Jawan Pass found Kamron Mcfolley down the middle of the field for a 79-strike and a 7-0 lead.
Pass' next throw was intercepted by Juan O'Neal and returned to the Carver 35-yard line. Bubba Blackmon ran 32 yards to the Carver 3 on 2nd-and-10. On 4th-and-goal from the 2, Blackmon fought through being hit in the backfield and stretched across the goal line to tie the score at 7-7.
Blackmon led all rushers with 103 yards on 18 carries.
Carver put together an 80-yard, 10-play drive and went back on top 13-7 when Cameron Jessie dove in from 3 yards out with 10:27 remaining in the half.
Harris County answered with a 8-play 74-yard drive of its own and took the lead when Maurice Fears took a toss right, stopped and threw a 27-yard pass to Josh Stein behind the defense. Matthew Crumbley's PAT kick gave the home Tigers the 14-13 lead.
Pass hit Us Beasley on separate 19-yard passes on the ensuing drive and took the lead for good on a Jalance Beard 3-yard run. Pass' 2-point conversion made the score 21-14 with 2:57 in the half.
Carver forced a Harris County punt and set up on its own 42-yard line. A Harris County pass interference took the ball to the home 38. Pass found Beasley again for a 17-yard gain before running a read option play for the final 21-yards and a score with 1:23 left in the second quarter and a 28-14 lead.
Harris County stopped Carver on three plays on the opening possession of the second half, forcing a punt. O'Neal's fumble on the Carver 24-yard line was recovered by Javontay Smith for Carver.
Harris County appeared to have stopped Carver on three plays once again, but a bad snap on a punt turned into a first down as Juvantae Martin gained 21 yards when he picked up the loose ball.
Harris County's next two possessions resulted in interceptions. Smith picked the first one that resulted in a 44-yard Pass run and a 34-14 score with 3:58 remaining in the third quarter.
Pass threw for 167 yards on 10-of-13 passing with one interception and one touchdown. He ran for 83 yards on 5 carries and added two more scores.
Kobe Hatcher picked the second Harris County pass off and returned it 19 yards for the score and a 40-14 lead with 2:22 remaining in the third.
