Brown scores three TDs as Escambia downs Glenwood
Atmore, Ala. -- Escambia Academy picked up where it left off last year and the Cougars defense shut out Glenwood for the second straight game here at Batchelor Field, 41-0 Friday night in a non-region game for both teams.
Last year, the Cougars shut out the Gators 54-0 here in the first round of the Class AAA playoffs so Glenwood has now played eight quarters without scoring any points against the 2014 AAA defending state champions, who upped their record to 6-3 on the season.
Glenwood, with their fourth loss in a row, dropped to 3-5 on the year and will end the regular season at home next Friday against Springwood Academy.
As in last year's game, Cougar halfback Kris Brown provided the offense. He had 154 yards before retiring on offense in the first half and scored three touchdowns on runs of 27, 20 and 47 yards to give Escambia 1 21-0 halftime advantage.
Last year Brown scored twice in the first quarter and also retired from offense in the first half after breaking the 100-yard rushing mark.
Glenwood did have one drive late in the second quarter but Carrington Huddleston's pass was picked off to end the threat. It was the Cougars second pickoff before intermission.
Trey Turner relieved Brown in the second half but the Cougars did not miss a beat.
Turner also scored two times in the third quarter, one on a run of 12 yards and another of 45 on the last play of the quarter for a 34-0 advantage.
Glenwood's third costly turnover turned into points for Escambia when linebacker Josh Fields picked up a Gator fumble and rumbled 25 yards for the final touchdown in the fourth period.
The Gator offense was unable to move the ball consistently except the rushing of fullback Mario Richmond, who had 64 yards in a losing effort.
