Pacelli gets first win over Hawkinsville
Pacelli defeated Hawkinsville 17-10 Friday night at Diemel Field, beating Hawkinsville for the first time.
Hawkinsville had won the previous seven meetings.
"It's a big deal to these kids. I'm proud of my guys for rebounding after a tough rivalry loss (to Brookstone)," Pacelli coach Alan Griffin said.
Leading by a touchdown Pacelli was able to stop Shemar Brooks short of a first down on fourth-and-3 with 1:50 remaining in the game.
Pacelli was unable to run the clock out and was forced to punt with 9 seconds left. Brooks returned the punt to the Pacelli 8-yard line before being run out of bounds with no time left.
Pacelli received the opening kick of the game and drove 59 yards in seven plays to go up 7-0 on a 23- yard run by Tre Sudberry.
Hawkinsville got a field goal after an interception.
The Vikings drove 70 yards in 9-plays and took a 14-3 lead into the half on a Sudberry 1-yard sneak.
Hawkinsville fumbled the opening kickoff return in the second half giving Pacelli a 35-yard field. The Vikings drove to the Red Devil 11 but settled for a Johnny Jacobs 28-yard field goal and a 17-3 lead.
Through this point of the game Pacelli had held Hawkinsville to 82-yards of total offense and 3 points while rolling up 192-yards of its own. One play changed the momentum of the contest.
Brooks went 65 yards on 2nd-and-9 to pull the Red Devils to within one score at 17-10 with 7:53 remaining in the third quarter.
Ben Davis fumbled after picking up 4 yards on the first play of the ensuing Pacelli possession giving the Red Devils the ball at the Viking 26-yard line.
Pacelli did not have another first down in the game.
Brooks appeared to score another long touchdown before it was called back on a holding penalty. The flag and an incomplete pass caused Hawkinsville to punt.
Hawkinsville had two possessions in the fourth quarter with a chance to tie the game.
The first drive moved from the Red Devil 21 to the Viking 19. On 4th-and-9 Chandler Jones was intercepted in the end zone by Mikal Marbel ending that threat.
After a Viking punt the second drive began with 5:24 remaining in the game. Hawkinsville was able to move from its own 48 to the Pacelli 11 when again it faced a 4th down. This time it was 4th-and-3 and the Vikings stopped Brooks.Friday at Diemel FieldHawkinsville 3 0 7 0--10
