Spencer wins state playoff game over Washington County
SANDERSVILLE, Ga. -- Spencer's historic season continues. The Greenwave knocked off Washington County 47-34 Friday night in the first round of the GHSA Class AAA state playoffs.
It was Spencer's first win in a GHSA state playoff game.
The Greenwave was making its first state playoff appearance since 1993. That season, they beat Shaw in a region playoff game, then lost to Wayne County in the first round of the state playoffs.
Prior to that, the last state playoff appearance for Spen
cer came in the Georgia Interscholastic Association state title game in 1967. Spencer beat Risley for the satte title that season.
The GIA was for black high schools since the GHSA did not admit black schools into its membership.
Tyrell Smith scored a pair of touchdowns in the first quarter as Spencer jumped out to a 14-0 lead. After Washington County scored 42 seconds into the second quarter, Spencer got two scores just two minutes apart as Ervin Davis and Khalil Thomas scored to give Spencer a 27-7 lead.
Washington County scored to make it 27-14, then Jermaine Hernandez scored to give the Greenwave a 34-14 lead. Washington County scored again right before halftime to cut the lead to 34-20.
After Washington County's punter bobbled a snap and ran out of bounds at the 6, Davis ran in for a score and a 41-20 lead early in the third.
After Washington County scored to cut the lead to 40-27, Daymeonta White returned a fumble for a score and a 47-27 lead at the end of the third quarter.
Spencer, which has won seven straight to improve to 8-3, will play at Dawson County on Friday. Dawson County beat Ringgold 49-28.
Washington County, which had won four straight, finishes its season at 5-6.
Washington County had advanced to the state championship game the past two seasons, losing to Buford in 2013 and Calhoun last season.
