High school football notes: Date, site not yet announced for Central-Hoover game

It was announced Tuesday night that Central and Hoover will open the 2016 season, but further details are not being released at this time.

Central coach Jamey DuBose said the contract has not been signed yet, so he could not release the date of the game nor the site.

DuBose has led Central for the past two years into the Class 7A state playoffs. Two years ago, the Red Devils lost in the quarterfinals. This past season, they lost in the semifinals.

Hoover has won 11 state championships in football, including three in a row (2012-14). Central's one title came in 1993.

DuBose led Prattville High to a state title in 2008, beating Hoover in the state championship game.

All-Star games

A number of local players will take part in the Georgia Sports Alliance East-West All-Star game in Macon on Saturday. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Ed DeFore Sports Complex.

Columbus' Derrick James, Brandon Palmer and Ja'Quan Mason, Kendrick's Micah Ransome, Spencer's Raekwon Allen and Tyrell Smith and Northside's Christian Johnson and Noah Daniel will play for the West team. The East team holds a 3-1 series edge.

Central's Toron Morten will play in the Blue-Grey All-American Bowl in Arlington, Texas, on Sunday.

Columbus' Essang Bassey was invited to play in the Georgia North-South All-Star game on Dec. 30, but he had to decline the invitation for travel reasons.

That game is played at A.J. McClung Memorial Stadium.

Spencer's Ye'Majesty Sanders and Carver's Giovanni Moore will play in the Rising Senior Bowl. It will be played Dec. 31 at Mercer University's Five Star Stadium with kickoff at 2 p.m.

All-region teams

In Region 2-AAA, the first teamers were Jordan linebacker Markus Wright, Spencer running back Tyrell Smith, wide receiver Jermaine Hernandez, offensive lineman Raekwon Allen, defensive lineman Chris Baker, linebacker Bryan Williams and safety Daymeonta White and Kendrick offensive lineman Deandre Singleton.

The second teamers were Jordan quarterback Romello Kimbrough, wide receiver D'Andre Snead and linebacker Dakoreon West and Spencer offensive lineman Ye'Majesty Sanders, defensive back DaShae Hubbard.

Those receiving honorable mention were Kendrick's Adayus Robertson, Cincerre Sellers, Isiah Sellers, Steven Cooper, Walter Boze, Michah Ransome, Dedarian Denson, Kayleem Bonds, Keevon Peterson, Jordan's Tim Bank, Raymond Jones, Daren Lewis, Kastadell Ford, Jamir Payne, Jaden

Jordan and Golden Strawther and Spencer's Marquis Hamilton, Travell Jones, Hermon Roberts, Jalen Taylor and Jesse Hicks.

In Region 4-A, Pacelli's Tre Sudberry was named the Offensive Player of the Year, while Prather Hudson was the 2-Way Player of the Year. Marion County won three awards as Mike Swaney won Coach of the Year, Lorenzo Smothers won Player of the Year and Austin Brannon won Defensive Player of the Year.

The first teamers were Pacelli's Dre Bowman, Ben Davis, Michael Marble and Johnny Jacobs, Brookstone's Ralph Leary, Josh Long and D'Andre Dashiell and Marion County's Mykelle Kelley, Matt Dennis, Hunter O'Neal, Kadarrius Hartage, Cameron Cox, Maurice Carter and Kabron Ellison.

The second teamers were Brookstone's Sam Nolen, Culver Norred, Walker Cottrell and Richard Swift, Pacelli's Ricket Carter, Ryan Graves, Tanner Hall and Trevor Robichaux and Marion County's Jordan Tillman, Hayden Gray, Joel Barley, Quentez Battle, Quntavis Clark and Lonnie Taylor.

Marion County's Dillon Stuffel, Cody Highnote and DJ Kelley were honorable mention.

In the GICAA, Calvary Christian had five players make the all-state team. They were running back Anthony Santiago, quarterback Kasen Andrews, defensive lineman Jacob Bland, defensive back Jacquez Green and kicker Thomas Chappel.

The Knights had seven make the All-Region I-AA team.

In addition to the five listed above, offensive lineman Dalton Williams and defensive athlete Mason Henderson were named.
