Northside's Caitlyn Jakes drives to the basket on Monday during the Lady Patriots' 61-42 win over Sandy Creek in the Shaw Christmas Tournament.

An easy Central-Talbotton victory turned into a much more dramatic finish on Monday at Northside during the first day of play in the William Henry Shaw holiday tournament.

Kendrick outscored Central by 12 points in the final quarter, creeping to within four points, but ultimately falling short 89-85. The Cherokees slid to the loser's bracket of the boys group B bracket, where they will face Spencer, which lost to Russell County, at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Kendrick. Central-Talbotton advanced in the winner's bracket and will face Russell County at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Kendrick.

Despite the loss, Kendrick got an impressive game from senior Marquel Dixon. Dixon scored 37 points to lead all scorers, including 21 in the second half to lead the Cherokees lead charge.

After falling behind by 14 at halftime and by more than 20 during the course of the third quarter, Kendrick slowly chipped away at the lead until it was as small as four points with a minute remaining in the game. In the end, Central-Talbotton hung on to advance to the next round, however.

Kendrick also got 16 points from Torez Hawk in the game. Central-Talbotton was led by Djmon Edge's 18, Nahjeeb Walker's 17, and Jaquavious Smith and Zy'Tarian Hill's 16.

Carver was the higher-seeded team in the tournament and the result may very well have been different on a different day. But as the Tigers varsity squad had already advanced to the championship game of another holiday tournament, it was forced to use a split squad against Northside on Monday and came out on the losing end of the game.

All of Carver's starters were playing at the Bear Brawl championship game at Houston County. The backups and regular junior varsity players could muster only 15 points in the first half and lost by 22 points.

Northside had a balanced performance with 12 players notching points on the stat sheet and three players reaching double figures. Jaykwon Allen had 13, Davion Thomas had 11 and Cordale Scott had 10. Carver was led by A.J. Watts, who scored 15 points.
