Lady Red Devils rally for 50-42 victory over Lady Tigers

Tiyah Johnson scored 23 points and Central overcame a 13-point halftime deficit to defeat Carver.

Carver played a tough man-to-man defense in the first half and forced numerous Central turnovers and poor shot selection. Carver led 31-18 at the half.

But Central adjusted at halftime and cut the lead to four points, 34-30, at the end of the third quarter.

Central completed the comeback in the fourth quarter, outscoring Carver 20-8.

Carver's aggressive play sent Central to the charity stripe often, and the Lady Red Devils hit 19-of-32 free throws in the game.

Shaw guard Kayla Bonilla poured in 33 points to lead the Lady Raiders to a 84-37 win over Spencer on Saturday.

Bonilla went past the 1,000-point mark for her career.

Dawniqua Snead added 20, and Jordan Bagsby had 10 for Shaw.

Tyerika Simmons led Spencer with 10.

CENTRAL 63, CARVER 57

DeMarcus Lampley scored 21 points as No. 1-ranked Central held off Carver Saturday night in a hard-fought game.

Daniel Melvin led Carver with 12 points.

Carver led 31-30 at the half, but Central pulled ahead by eight, 47-39, by the third quarter.

The teams battled back and forth in the fourth quarter and Central held on for the win.

Central will play the winner of the Smiths Station-Auburn game Feb. 9 in the Area 4-7A title game. Central has already clinched a state playoff spot. A win in the area title game would give them a home game in the first round of the state tournament.

Central, riding a 22-game winning streak, is ranked No. 1 by the Alabama Sports Writers Association. That's the first time the Red Devils have been ranked No. 1 since 2002.

LAGRANGE, Ga. -- JaQuan Mason scored 17 points and Elijah Gardner added 15, but Columbus fell 69-57 to LaGrange on Saturday.

Noah Lott had 12 and Lincoln Smith added 10.

Columbus was down 51-42 at the end of three quarters but rallied to pull within two, 59-57. The Blue Devils had three chances to tie the game, but they were unable to do so.
