High school roundup: Four local wrestlers advance to state semifinals

DULUTH, Ga. -- Four Columbus wrestlers moved into the semifinals as the GHSA state wrestling tournament got underway Thursday for Classes 3A and 5A.

Winners of their first matches competed in the quarterfinals Thursday night. Those who lost their opener return for consolation bracket action on Friday.

Carver's Brooks Alfred, Kendrick's Isaiah Sellers and Spencer's Kameron Blackshear and Elijah McNickels are each two wins away from winning a state championship.

In Class 5A, Brooks Alfred (220 pounds) beat Gino Smith 17-7. He advanced to the semifinals with a pin at 2:51 of Dalton's Tucker Sumner.

Alfred's teammate, Javon Walker (145) beat Mundy Mills' Johnny Chastain with a pin at 3:00. Walker lost his quarterfinal match to Northside-Warner Robins' Logan Chastain 8-4.

Northside's John Jones (106) beat Luella's Cameron Hunter 8-0, but then he lost to Camden County's Tyler Crew 8-0.

Columbus' Josh McAlister (138) beat Gainesville's Jerson Garcia 3-1, but he then lost to Cass' Hunter Quinn in 3:17. McAlister's teammate, William Nana-Fabu (285) lost to Cass' Seven Richards 2-1.

Hardaway's Sh'Kale Barnes lost 15-0 to Clarke Central's Cleveland Belton.

In Class 3A, Blackshear (170) pinned East Hall's Joseph Smith in 39 seconds, then advanced to the semifinals with a 5-4 win over Callaway's Andrew Thomas.

McNickels (138) beat East Hall's Tristan Rhodes 19-2. He advanced to the semifinals with a 11-5 win over Tyrese Perdue of McNair. Jeremy Burgess (152) pinned Jackson County's Tyler Sosebee in 2:43, but then lost to Morgan County's Mason Woodham.

Jasaad Graves (220) lost 1-0 to Oconee County's Dalton Sikes. Chris Baker (285) fell in 2:28 to Islands' Jeremy Wilson. Bryan Williams (182) lost in 2:59 to Banneker's John Brooks.

Sellers (195) pinned Dodge County's Cameron McCloud in 1:41. He advanced to the semifinals with a 4-2 win over Barrow County's Tyler Daniels. Sellers' teammate Devon Hill (120) lost to Jefferson's Mitchell McGhee in 27 seconds.

Jordan's Renard Swiney lost in 3:04 to Dodge County's Aaron Spires.

The semifinals for 3A and 5A will be held Friday.

The tournament also gets underway for Class A and 2A.




SEALE, Ala. — K.C. Randolph scored 23 points and Damon Lloyd added 21 as Russell County beat Valley 84-65 in the Area 5-6A tournament on Thursday night.

The Warriors will host Opelika at 5 p.m. Saturday for the area championship.

MANCHESTER, Ga. -- Demarcus Addie scored 18 points Thursday night to lead Manchester to a 75-41 win over Chattahoochee County in the Region 5-AA semifinal.

Manchester will face Bowden Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in the region title game. ChattCo will face Temple at 4:30 p.m. in the third-place game.Thursday at Manchester
