High school roundup: Northside girls open state playoffs with win

STOCKBRIDGE, Ga. -- Northside's Jamiyah Austin scored just three points Tuesday night, but they were the deciding factor in a 53-51 win over Woodland-Stockbridge in the first round of GHSA Class 5A state playoffs.

The Lady Patriots (20-7) trailed 51-50 when Austin hit a field goal with 17.4 seconds left. Woodlawn turned the ball over and fouled Austin, who hit 1 of 2 free thows with 6.5 seconds remaining.

Jessica Herndon had 15 points and nine rebounds, Caitlyn Jakes had 15 points and eight rebounds.

Northside will play at Flowery Branch in the second round Friday. Flowery Branch beat Lithia Springs 58-50 on Tuesday.Tuesday at Woodland-Stockbridge

HAMPTON, Ga. -- Jessika Carter scored 20 points, pulled down 14 rebounds and had six blocks, but the Lady Tigers fell to Dutchtown 56-43 in the first round of the GHSA Class 5A state playoffs.

Harris County fell behind by 17 points but rallied to tie the game at 38 in the third quarter. The Lady Tigers then went cold from the field.

Taziha Fanning had 18 and 10 rebounds for Harris County in the loss.Tuesday at Dutchtown

Jack Copley hit a grand slam as part of a six-run fourth inning to lift Columbus over Woodward Academy 11-1 on Tuesday at Randy Jordan Field.

The game ended in the bottom of the fifth after the Blue Devils took a 10-run lead due to the mercy rule.

Becker struck out seven and allowed just two hits in earning the win.
