High school roundup: Columbus, Hardaway win to tighten up playoff race
Columbus climbed to within a half-game of Northside for first place in Region 1-5A with a 14-1 win over Shaw on Tuesday.
The game was shortened to five innings due to the mercy rule.
Jack Copley hit a grand slam and a double and drove in six runs for the Blue Devils, who are 11-3 in the region. Northside is 12-3.
Jackson Mellenberg drove in a pair of runs for Columbus.
Wesley Johnson knocked in Shaw’s run.
Columbus and Northside play twice later this week, at Columbus on Thursday and at Northside on Friday.

Hardaway moved into a tie with LaGrange for the fourth and final playoff spot in Region 1-5A with a 12-0 victory over Carver on Tuesday.
Ryan Anderson led the Hawks, going 3-for-3 with a double and five RBIs. Sam Anthony also had a double and two RBIs.
Hardaway and LaGrange play twice later this week, at Hardaway on Thursday and at LaGrange on Friday.

The Columbus girls and the Northside boys won track meets at Kinnett Stadium on Tuesday.
The Lady Blue Devils finished with 204 points, while Northside had 166.5.
The Patriots won with 229.5, while Columbus was second with 122.
Columbus’ Brittany Floyd was the girls high-point performer with 34.5 points, four ahead of Northside’s Samyzia Sears.
Northside’s Tyrris Mitchell was the boys high-point performer with 37.5, eight ahead of Jordan’s Deandre Snead.
