High school roundup: Columbus girls win first-round match in state tennis tournament

The Columbus High girls tennis team defeated Union Grove 4-1 on Tuesday in the first round of the Class 5A state tournament.

The Lady Blue Devils are now 21-0 on the season. They will host a second-round match next week.

Mary Weston Courville and Caroline Boren won at singles for Columbus.

Madelyn Boren and Abby Courville won at No. 1 doubles. Nicole Gordon and Elizabeth Steelmon won at No. 2 doubles.

Golf

Brookstone wins area golf championship

The Brookstone boys golf team shot a 3-over 291 to win the Area 1-A golf championship on Tuesday at Healy Point Country Club in Macon.

Evans Copeland earned medalist honors with a 1-under 71. He tied with teammate Walker Hinds with the lowest score, but Copeland won the tiebreaker.

The tiebreaker was regression, and Copeland had a birdie on 17 to break the tie.

The Cougars will play in the Class A-private school state tournament at Forrest Hills in Augusta on May 16.

LaGrange 1, Hardaway 0

LaGrange’s Jake Farrar pitched a complete-game shutout to defeat Hardaway 1-0 on Tuesday afternoon.

Sam Anthony was the only Hardaway player to get a hit against Farrar. That came to leadoff the fourth.

The Hawks’ best scoring opportunity came in the fifth. They loaded the bases with no outs, but a runner was thrown out at home on a fielder’s choice and a double play ended the inning.

Jake Howard double in LaGrange’s run in the bottom of the sixth. It was unearned.

Mykel Page (3-4) suffered the loss. He allowed just four hits and a walk.

The win puts LaGrange (8-6) a half-game ahead of Hardaway (8-7) for the fourth and final playoff berth in Region 1-5A. The win also gives LaGrange the tiebreaker in case the teams end up in a tie.

Hardaway plays at Columbus on Wednesday, while LaGrange plays at Harris County.
