Brookstone, Columbus advance in tennis

The Brookstone boys and girls tennis teams and the Columbus boys all won their state tournament matches on Monday.

The Brookstone girls had little trouble in routing Christian Heritage 5-0 in the first round of the Class A-private school tournament.

The Brookstone boys lost just one match and beat Mount Pisgah 4-1 in a first-round match.

Meanwhile, the Columbus boys also had little trouble in beating Flowery Branch 4-0 at Lakebottom in the second round of the Class 5A tournament.

Brookstone Girls

Brookstone lost just three games as three of the matches were won 6-0, 6-0.

"As these scores reflect, the girls were really sharp today," Brookstone coach Mary Lynne Cumiskey said.

"They played aggressively and were executing their shots and hitting winners. It's the kind of tennis they need to play from here on out."

Playing at No. 2 singles, Sammi Rice gave the Lady Cougars the first point with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Autumn Cross.

Gracie Hemmings won the second point at No. 1 singles, a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Claudia Brumlow.

Rachel Hemmings finished the sweep at singles with a 6,-0, 6-0 win over Elizabeth Dean.

That clinched the match for Brookstone.

Lillie Patton and Zoe Vazquez won at No. 1 doubles, 6-0, 6-0 over Marlee Ellis and Sydney McEntire.

Abigail Pitts and Gracie Glass won at No. 2 doubles, 6-1, 6-1 over Morgan Branum and Baleigh McAllister.

The Lady Cougars, who are 15-2, host Pinecrest Academy in the second round at 10 a.m. Wednesday.

Brookstone boys

The Cougars got singles wins from Jack Pease and Charles Pease.

Jack beat Aidan Chaplin 6-1, 6-3 at No. 1, while Charles beat Matthew McKinnon 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3.

Josh Fernicola lost at No. 2 singles, 6-0, 6-0 to Ben Austin.

Reed Bickerstaff and Michael Umana beat Will Avery and Solomon Crouch at No. 1 doubles, 7-6 (7-4), 6-4.

Taylor Harris and Sutton Eggena beat Rhett Hilburn and Owen Kern at No. 2 doubles, 6-0, 6-1.

Brookstone will host Landmark Christian in the second round. No date or time has been announced.

Columbus boys

After a close first-round match, Columbus breezed into the state quarterfinals.

The Blue Devils won two of the singles matches.

Jacob Yates beat Phillip Correra 6-2, 6-0 at No. 1, and Ford Cummings beat Ryan Keral 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2.

Jacob Sholtis and Kyle Canady won at No. 1 doubles, 6-1, 6-1.

Parker Swift and Chris Sidor won at No. 1 doubles, 6-1, 6-0 over Dylan Kierland and Jacob Holston.

The Win Cawthorne vs. Tucker Smallwood match at No. 3 singles was pulled after the team match had been decided.

Columbus will play at Lakeside-Evans in the third round. No date and time has been announced.
