High school roundup: Courville leads Columbus tennis to win over Clarke Central

Columbus High’s Mary Weston Courville rallied from a set down to beat Clarke Central’s Caroline Caldwell 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1 singles on Tuesday.

That gave the Lady Blue Devils the 3-1 win in the second round of the Class 5A state playoffs at Lakebottom Park.

“The girls fought hard today,” Columbus coach MikelAnna Hill said. “Clarke was a solid team, and we had to play our best to beat them.

“I saw a lot of fight on the courts today, which is what we have to have as we head into the next round.”

Madelyn Boren and Abby Courville provided Columbus with its first win in the match. At No. 1 doubles, they beat Isobel Crain and Catherine Argabright 6-1, 6-2.

Nicole Gordon and Elizabeth Steelmon won at No. 2 doubles for a 2-0 lead. They beat Denise Sunta and Johanna Hall, 6-1, 6-0.

Clarke Central won the No. 2 singles as Maddy Jenkins beat Maddison Abell 6-1, 6-4.

After Courville closed out the match, the No. 3 singles match was pulled. Columbus’ Caroline Boren was leading Amelia Delamater 6-2, 2-0.

Columbus will host Dunwood at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at Lakebottom in the state quarterfinals. Dunwoody beat South Effingham 3-1 in its second-round match.

Sara Castillo drove in a run, but Central lost 3-2 to Beauregard.

Northside lost 3-0 to Northgate on Tuesday in the first round of the Class 5A state playoffs.

Golf

Central’s Bishop qualifies

Central’s Tyler Bishop shot a 79 on Monday at Lakewood Golf Course in the Class 7A boys stats sectional.

With that score, Bishop earned one of two individual berths in the sub-state tournament.

Auburn won the sectional and Enterprise finished second. Both earned berths in the sub-state.
