Columbus girls, both Brookstone tennis teams advance to semifinals
Four tennis teams from Columbus competed in the state quarterfinals Wednesday.
Brookstone girls 5, Pinecrest 0
The Brookstone girls tennis team was up first and simply overpowered Pinecrest Academy 5-0 in the Class A-privatee school quarterfinals. The Lady Cougars will play either Athens Academy or Walker next.
The Lady Paladins came into the match with an impressive 14-4 overall record, but Brookstone lost only 12 games as all matches were completed with 15 minutes of each other. The Cougars are now 16-2.
First off was the No. 1 doubles team of Abbie Dillon and Lillie Patton, which won without dropping a game in less than an hour..
Next off was Rachel Hemmings at No. 3 singles, followed by Abigail Pitts and Gracie Glass at No. 2 doubles to secure the match for Brookstone.
“Right now our girls are focused and because of that playing very well as a team,” Cumiskey said. “I like to see that continue. We are playing better with each match as the competition will get tougher.”

Brookstone boys 4, Landmark Christian 1
Brookstone improved to 13-3 with its state quarter final win over Landmark Christian on Wednesday.
Jack Pease and Charles Pease both won in singles. Jack at No. 1 and his brother, Charles, at No. 3.
The Cougars swept the doubles with Reed Bickerstaff and Michael Umana wining at No. 1 and Taylor Harris and Sutton Eggena winning at No. 2.
Brookstone will face either Paideia or Mount Paran in the semifinals.
Columbus girls 3, Dunwoody 0
Columbus improved to 23-0 with its 3-0 win over Dunwood at Lakebottom Park on Wednesday.
Mary Weston Courville won at No. 1 singles and Caroline Voren won at No. 3 singles to give Columbus a quick 2-0 lead.
Madelyn Boren and Abby Courville lost the first set at No. 1 doubles, then rallied to win the final two sets to clinch the match.
“Today was by far our most challenging match of the season,” Columbus coach MikelAnna Hill said. “The girls pushed through, though. They took all their games to levels that they hadn't really had to all year, and it was a sight.
“After losing the first set in a tiebreak, 1 doubles elevated their game and played 2 of the most impressive sets of the year to clinch the win for us. All the girls were motivated and, most importantly, a true team today. They were genuinely rooting for each other and that made a huge difference in the outcome.”
Columbus will play Cambridge in the semifinals.
Lakeside-Evans boys 4, Columbus 0
Lakeside-Evans, the defending Class 5A state champion, beat Columbus 4-0 on Wednesday in a match at Evans.
