Glenwood-Monroe game suspended

Game 1 of Glenwood’s semifinal series in the AISA Class 3A state playoffs against Monroe Academy is still in question as rain forced a suspension of the game in the sixth inning with Glenwood leading 3-2.

Wednesday’s schedule called for a doubleheader at Glenwood, but the weather came in so fast, the field was left with standing water and the decision between the two coaches and umpires was to discontinue play.

The teams will finish the game starting at 3 p.m. Friday. Game 2 will follow. If a third game is needed, it will be played Friday night.

“This is the first time I have ever been a part of a suspended game,” said Glenwood coach Tim Fanning after the meeting with the Monroe coach. “I have had rain delays and rainouts but not a suspended game.”

“We decided because of the weather (Thursday), to pick up the game Friday and play it out from there.”

The Gators got off to a fast start as the first four batters reached base, highlighted by Carson Hicks’ RBI single. But Monroe’s shortstop, Griffin McKenzie, turned a double play with the bases loaded, which allowed the second run to score.

Carson Allison scored the Gators’ third run to make it 3-0 when he singled off the Volunteer pitchers leg and JW Horton threw the ball away, allowing Allison to go to second. He scored on Chase Dennis’ single.

The Volunteers scored both their runs in the sixth on a hit, a walk and two Glenwood errors to make it 3-2. Both runs for Monroe against Glenwood’s Daniel Holley were unearned as he had allowed only one hit until that inning.

In the bottom of the sixth, Holley singled with one out when Allison came up and with a one strike count, the rain came in.

“We had nine hits to their two and had only three runs,” Fanning after the game said. “We just need to get runners in when they are in scoring position.”
