Brookstone, Calvary Day split first two games
Brookstone scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to down Calvary Day 4-2 in Game 1 of their Class A-private school series.
The Cougars, the No. 8 seed, couldn’t finish off the sweep, however, losing 10-4 to Calvary, the 9 seed, in Game 2.
Game 3 will be played today at Brookstone at 10 a.m.
“I told our guys we are both in the same place, the winner tomorrow keeps playing,” Brookstone coach Vince Massey said.
Drew Webb led off with a walk and went to second on Walker Cottrell’s sacrifice bunt. He went to third on Preston Campbell’s swinging bunt that went between the pitcher and third baseman.
Trey Lingo drove in Webb ith the go-ahead run with a slow roller to second base. Sam Lowe knocked in Campbell with a single to left for a 4-2 lead.
That was enough as Culver Norred finished with a perfect seventh inning. The southpaw allowed just six hits in the complete-game performance.
The two runs he gave up both came in the second, one coming on a pickoff play.
He held Calvary catcher Chris Bashlov to just one hit in three at-bats. Bashlov came into the game hitting better than .600.
“Culver has a lot of expereince and he was able to step up,” Massey said.
Brookstone got one of the runs back in the bottom of the second. James Sherrer was hit by a pitch. He later scored on Webb’s single.
The Cougars tied the game in the third. Campbell walked and scored on Sherrer’s single to right.
Perhaps the biggest play of the game came in the fourth. Calvary’s Trey Anson reached on an error and later tried to score on a single to center. A perfect throw from Webb nailed him at the plate.
“That was big,” Massey said. “In a game you will face adverse situations, and it is how you handle those. That was a big momentum swing.”
In Game 2, After Calvary scored two in the bottom of the first, Brookstone tied the game in the second. Norred hit a sacrifice fly and the other run scored on an error.
Calvary pulled away with three runs in the third, a single run in the fourth and four more in the sixth.
