Knights’ bats overcome errors to force Game 3

Calvary Christian pounded out 18 runs on 21 hits Friday to defeat Jefferson Academy 18-13 and take Game 2 of their GICAA Division I semifinal series, forcing a Game 3 on Saturday.

Jefferson won Game 1 9-8 in a back-for-forth, eight-inning battle. Calvary will play Saturday at 11 a.m. despite recording nine errors Friday, five in Game 1 and four in Game 2. Saturday’s winner will take on the Fullington-Central Fellowship winner in the championship series May 13-14.

In Game 2, Calvary broke open a 5-3 game with nine runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and held on for the win.

Nick Baker allowed nine runs on seven hits and struck out five to get the win. Dawson Gardner took the loss in relief.

Garrett McGlamory and Kyle Masse each went 4-for-5. Masse drove in three runs. Kyle Ammons and Tyler Hostillo each had three hits. Trey Anthony went 2-for-4 and drove in four runs.

In Game 1, Calvary was leading 4-2 going into the bottom of the fifth inning when disaster struck. The Knights committed three of their five errors in the game, had a passed ball and a dropped third strike. Jefferson took advantage of the miscues and scored four runs to go up 6-4.

Calvary rallied to tie the game at 6-6 in the top of the sixth inning as Masse’s single to center drove in McGlamory and Cody Russell.

The Jaguars loaded the bases to start the bottom of the sixth and chased Russell from the game. Jon Jon Brown came on in relief. He a got a fly out to center but then walked in a run. Jefferson got a single to score another and the Jaguars were up 8-6.

In the top of the seventh, Brown doubled in Zachary Garcia to make 8-7. McGlamory singled in Anthony to tie the game at 8-8.

The Knights came up scoreless in the top of the eighth, and the Jaguars took advantage with a game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the inning.
