Spencer has proven it knows how to rally, but could the Greenwave do it against Crisp County

Spencer had scored big come-from-behind wins over Northside and Kendrick, but the Greenwave couldn’t do it again on Friday night.

Crisp County built a 14-0 lead in the first quarter and held to down the Greenwave 21-12 at A.J. McClung Memorial Stadium.

Spencer pulled to within 14-6 in the second quarter, then had multiple chances to get even closer but were unable to. Penalties in key situations hurt the Greenwave.

“We had a couple (penalties), but more than anything we got to be efficient enough on offense to pounch it in when we get in the red zone. and we didn’t do that tonight,” Spencer coach Pierre Coffey said.

Crisp County jumped out to the 14-point lead on a pair of Patrick Felton to Jammie Robinson touchdown passes.

Crisp County was forced to punt early in the second quarter at the Spencer 32-yard line. The punter tried to a rugby style kick by running to the right.

Spencer’s Jaquevious Moore blocked the punt and finally recovered it at the Crisp County 32.

It looked like the Greenwave would waste the opportunity as Khalil Thomas had a pass intercepted on the second play, but the Cougars were called for roughing the quarterback.

On the next play from the 17, Jaleel Grimes took the hand off around right end and dove in at the pylon.

A bad snap on the PAT left Spencer eight points down, 14-6, with 9:10 left in the first half.

Spencer was unable to take advantage of a Crisp fumble on its next possession. Ameir Abrams recovered at the Crisp 36. But the Greenwave was unable to pick up a first down.

In the third quarter, Spencer drove 51 yards to the Crisp 6, but Grimes was tackled for a 1-yard loss on fourth-and-goal. Grimes had set up The Greenwave at the 9 on a 37-yard run. But on the next play, Thomas was sacked for a 2-yard loss and the Greenwave was called for an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.

After Crisp County scored on Felton’s 9-yard run with 2:25 left, Spencer drove 50 yards for a touchdown. Thomas hit Cory Calhoun from 24 yards out with 44.4 seconds left. The pass on the two-point try fell incomplete.

Individual stats: Rushing — Crisp County, Felton 15-92; Spencer, Jaleel Grimes 12-64. Passing — Crisp County, Felton 10-17, 129 yards. Spencer, Thomas 6-15, 47 yards. Receiving — Crisp County, Robinson, 4-98.

Coach quote: “That is a big time football team. It was a great game to see where we are. They are Trople-A and we are Double-A. We will go back and review and see where we need to coach them up. It was a physical, physical game. We played well for the most part on defense,” — Coffey.
