Harris County unable to overcome late first-half Callaway touchdown

Callaway scored on the final play of the first halk and went on to a 48-21 victory over Harris County on Friday night at Tiger Stadium.

In the final minutes of the first half, Harris County trailed Callaway 14-7, and it looked like it would be that way at halftime. But Callaway had a trick up its sleeve. Callaway put in its second string quarterback Braylon Sanders, who threw up a deep pass in the end zone as time was expiring and found Courtney Williams for the 41-yard score.

DJ Atkins, running back, Callaway. Atkins was the work horse for the Cavaliers Friday night. The speedster found the end zone three times after touching the ball 29 times. Atkins finished the night with 201 rushing yards.

Dylan Johnson, quarterback, Callaway. Johnson was efficient for the Cavaliers ending the night 9-for-13 for 137 yards. The senior didn’t turn the ball over and also rushed for 30 yards.

Cal’von Harris, running back, Harris County. Harris’ biggest play of the night didn’t come from the ground, but in the passing game. Down 7-0, Jordan Griffin found a streaking Harris, who had to bobble the ball a few times before securing the catch, for a 68-yard touchdown. Harris finished the night with three catches for 83 yards while rushing for another 48.

Harris County – Jordan Griffin, quarterback, 4-for-14, 98 yards, TD, 55 rushing yards with TD. Tank Adams, running back, four rushes for 54 yards, TD. T.J. Chiles, running back, 1 catch for 15 yards.

Coach quote: “We have to become tougher individuals on defense and learn to tackle,” said Harris County coach Zac Howard. “It pretty much stuck the dagger in us. You much rather in down one score than two” – on the last second touchdown in the first half.
