Smiths Station picks up a win — by forfeit

Smiths Station picked up a victory on Monday.

The Alabama High School Athletic Association ruled that R.E. Lee had to forfeit six of its wins for using an ineligible player.

According to a news release from the AHSAA, “Lee played an ineligible student in violation of the AHSAA Suspensions Rule found on page 36 of the 2016-17 AHSAA Handbook, which states a transfer student must in in good standing with the student’s previous school(s).”

Lee was forced to forfeit wins over Smiths Station, Prattville, Jeff Davis, Sidney Lanier, Park Crossing and Carver-Montgomery.

The losses also knocked Lee out of the state playoffs. Jeff Davis is now the fourth seed from Region 2-7A.

Smiths Station, which lost 42-14 to Lee on Sept. 8, will now be credited with a win in that game. The Panthers finish the season at 2-8 overall and 1-5 in the region.
