Former Hardaway running back is heading to Virginia Tech
Former Hardaway Hawks running back Marco Lee is headed for Division I football after a brief junior college stint.
Lee, who spent the previous two years at the JUCO level, committed to Virginia Tech in early November. Wednesday morning, he told the L-E he will take his visit to the Blacksburg, Va. campus on Dec. 14 and will enroll at classes at the school in January.
“I think coach (Justin) Fuente is building a great program,” Lee said. “I feel like if everyone buys in and trusts the process, that they’ll be able to be great.”
Lee said both Murray State and Arkansas Pine Bluff also expressed interest in him.
Lee ran for more than 2,500 yards in two seasons for Hardaway’s varsity team. As a senior, Lee was voted co-player of the year in GHSA’s 1-4A region after rushing for 1,565 yards and 15 touchdowns.
“It feels great knowing that if you work hard, you can have great accomplishments,” Lee said. “But for now, I’m just ready to go in and see where I can get from there.”
Lee rushed for more than 800 yards and five touchdowns in 2019 at Coffeyville Community College. In his college career, he has amassed 1,200 rushing yards and has scored nine touchdowns.
Lee, a three-star player, is the No. 3 JUCO running back in the nation, according to 247Sports. Former Florida State running back ZaQuandre White is the nation’s No. 1 JUCO running back, with former Ohio State running back Brian Snead ranked No. 2.
Lee has two-years of on-field eligibility remaining, plus a redshirt year if necessary.
“I know a lot of people that have gone D-1 from Columbus,” Lee said, “and that just helped me get to where I wanted to be, and it motivated me.
