3 things to know from Day 1
Carver wins a tough one -- but must improve
Carver’s 48-43 win over Banneker wasn’t over until the final seconds, but really should have been put away sooner. The Tigers exploded out of the opening tip, but went cold in the second quarter. Banneker, to its credit, did enough to hang around, and had several opportunities to tie the game -- or take the lead -- in the fourth quarter.
It wasn’t a pretty win for the defending class 4A state champions, but this is what early-season, non-region games are for: to correct any issues, get into rhythm with one’s teammates and gear up for region play. All wins count the same, and Carver did what was necessary to pull it off.
Kendrick plays tough vs. Lanett
Lanett’s 3-5 record might be a bit deceiving: The Panthers are loaded with talent, and boast a plethora of size throughout their lineup.
Kendrick, to the Cherokees’ credit, hung in close with Lanett until a second-half scoring spree put the game out of reach. The Panthers won 67-54, but Kendrick has a lot of positives to take from the game.
Team effort carries Hardaway
The Hardaway girls pulled out a close win over Tri-Cities, 54-49, with help from both ends of the rotation.
Nine Hawks scored in the game, led by senior guard Deyanna McKinney (19 points), junior guard JiMia Cobb (14 points) and junior guard Tiyanna Latimer (10 points).
The Hawks improved to 4-6 with the win and face Auburn High at 6 p.m. Monday at Spencer.
