Phenix City schools to hold press conference at Central High amid coach search. Here’s more.

The Phenix City Board of Education has called an “emergency” meeting scheduled for Tuesday evening, possibly related to the announcement of a new Central High head football coach.

On Tuesday, a source told the Ledger-Enquirer that Pinson Valley coach Patrick Nix, father of Auburn quarterback Bo Nix, is being considered for the Red Devils head coaching job. Central athletic director Bobby Wright told the Ledger-Enquirer that the new coach will be introduced at a press conference will be held at Central’s expansion facility — which the football team uses for practice — following the meeting.

“We are canceling the work session but are having an emergency meeting to consider personnel at 5 p.m. (Tuesday),” Wilkes told the Ledger-Enquirer. “At 6 p.m., we will have a press conference in the Expansion Facility (Tuesday night). Thursday we will meet regarding personnel and math textbook committee. “

PCBOE Superintendent Randy Wilkes would not confirm nor deny the purpose of the meeting beyond it being related to personnel, saying he could not comment on the matter until after the board meeting.

Wilkes said it is “public knowledge” that Central has an opening. A hire must be made as an educator first, then the school would appoint him or her as the head football coach.

The position was vacated by Jamey DuBose on Jan. 7. He has since been hired as head football coach at Lowndes High in Valdosta.
