Can the Troup girls keep winning? 3 things to know about area high school basketball.

Chattahoochee Valley high school basketball is in full swing, and several teams are vying for top seeds in their respective region tournaments.

Here are three things to know about where notable local teams stand:

1. Spencer boys put unbeaten region record on the line

Spencer is rolling. The Greenwave is 14-3 overall, 7-0 in region 5-2A and has not lost since they fell 73-60 to 5A Harris County on Dec. 28.

The Greenwave will put their unbeaten region record on the line Tuesday night, though, when they host Callaway at 7:30 p.m. in a battle of the region’s top two squads.

Callaway (6-2) has not lost since Jan. 4, the last time the two teams played in Spencer’s 68-67 win. Should the Greenwave pull out another win, they will take a sizable lead in the race for the region’s top spot, and appear destined for the top seed in the region tournament.

2. Carver boys, girls continue region slate

More state championship appearances appear possible at Carver, where the boys and girls teams continue to find ways to win.

The Carver girls lead region 1-4A outright, after beating Americus-Sumter 54-46 this past Saturday. And the road ahead looks more than doable.

Carver’s girls host sixth-place Westover Tuesday night (6 p.m.), then face fifth-place Cairo, a 4-16 Northside squad and wrap up the season with another matchup with Westover. The Carver girls should be a No. 1 seed in the 1-4A region tournament.

Carver’s boys currently sit third in region 1-4A. The Tigers face 6A Lee County Monday night in the MLK Basketball Classic at Monroe High, before taking on Westover in a game that could go a long way in determining region tournament seeding.

Westover is in second place in the region with a 9-1 record. Carver holds a 9-3 region record, so the Tigers could make up ground on the Patriots, should they win on Tuesday.

After that, it should be fairly easy sailing for the Carver boys. They host last-place Cairo and 1-15 Northside on Jan. 24 and Jan. 25, then travel to Westover to wrap up the regular season.

3. Troup girls just keep winning, LaGrange boys on a slide

Troup’s girls just keep winning.

The Tigers blew out Chapel Hill 60-37 on the road Saturday night to remain undefeated at 16-0 and 6-0 in region 5-4A.

They will have to keep winning, though, if they want to maintain that top spot. Second-place Central-Carrolton’s only region loss this season came at the hands of Troup. The two teams face off Jan. 31, in a game that could determine the top seed in the region tournament.

The LaGrange boys walked into a raucous environment inside Troup’s new 65,000 square-foot athletic facility on Jan. 10, dealt with the pressure and walked away with a 58-54 win.

Since then, though, the Grangers have been on a downward slide, losing to Sandy Creek (by 30 points), Chapel Hill and Central-Carrolton (in overtime). They face Cedartown Tuesday with the chance to get back on the winning track.
