Muscogee County School District suspends all athletics due to coronavirus concerns
Muscogee County School District announced Thursday evening it will suspend all athletics, the latest domino to fall due to concerns surrounding the coronavirus pandemic.
All athletic activities, including practices and games, will be suspended from March 13 to April 5. MCSD will reevaluate the situation on April 6.
According to MCSD, there are to be no practices, team conditioning or competitions. Gyms, weight rooms, athletic facilities and athletic fields will be closed after school to all activities.
This suspension of activities will go into effect on Friday. This includes all weekday and weekend activities.
The GHSA recommended that all member schools suspend spring activities Thursday, the same day that the NCAA canceled all spring and winter sports championships, including the NCAA men’s basketball tournament.
“We can only recommend that they suspend playing,” said Robin Hines, executive director of the GHSA. “The final decision will rest with the local school systems.”
GHSA is also postponing the state literary competitions scheduled for March 21 and May 14.
