Central Red Devils to host Hoover for 2020 football season opener
Central was originally supposed to hold an intrasquad scrimmage this Friday. Now, the Red Devils are hosting one of Alabama’s best football teams.
Central will host Hoover in Friday at Garrett-Harrison Stadium, Phenix City Schools announced Tuesday night.
The Red Devils have notable recent history with Hoover. The Buccaneers won last year’s game 17-14 on a 30-yard field goal as time expired at the Cramton Bowl.
Central has never beaten Hoover. The Red Devils trail the all-time series 3-0, according to the Alabama High School Football Historical Society.
Hoover beat Central 23-7 in 2016, and 21-14 in 1978, when the former was still named W.A. Berry High School.
General admission tickets will go on sale Wednesday at noon, according to PCS Superintendent Randy Wilkes. Tickets can be purchased through GoFan for $10 each.
Limited capacity at Central home games
Phenix City Schools will use a capacity cap of 25% for all football home games this season. Garrett-Harrison Stadium, where Central plays its home games, holds 8,000 spectators.
The home team’s initial ticket allotment is 1,200, while visiting teams will receive 800 tickets. All tickets must be purchased through GoFan.
Individuals may stand behind the fence in the south end zone, as long as they maintain social distancing. Masks are required at all times for spectators.
Home team supporters may sit in the northern and southern portions of the visitors side, which will be designated with markings.
Only essential personnel are allowed on the sideline: two individuals from Hughston Clinic, media (outside the players’ box) and visiting coaches/recruiting agencies, provided they give prior notice.
Phenix City Schools strongly recommends that all home and away participants — coaches, players and officials — undergo temperature checks and health screenings before travel.
This is a breaking story and will be updated.
