Chattahoochee Valley high school football schedule, predictions: Who wins this week?
It’s the second week of high school football in the Chattahoochee Valley.
While Georgia schools have not yet started — Georgia High School Association member schools can’t start until Sept. 4 at the earliest — most of the Chattahoochee Valley’s Alabama schools are in full swing.
Central returns to the field after falling 45-35 to Hoover in its season opener, while Glenwood looks to go 2-0 following a surprise victory over Bessemer in a state title rematch.
Smiths Station enters the fold this week, playing its first game after Russell County High School delayed fall sports and thus forfeited last weekend’s scheduled season opener.
Here’s what you should watch for in this week’s games, along with the L-E’s staff predictions.
Prediction: Central 35, Eufaula 31
Patrick Nix’s Central Red Devils dropped a tough one to Hoover last week, while Eufaula cruised to an easy win over Carroll. The two teams have not met since 2007, a 28-14 Central win.
The Red Devils boast enough offensive talent to compete with the best. Receiver Jackson Meeks landed an offer from Georgia after his 204-yard, three-touchdown performance in week one, while quarterbacks Caleb Nix and Trey Miles both looked capable of running the offense.
In a non-region, cross-classification game between teams that haven’t played in 13 years, it’s always safe to go with the more talented team.
That team, it appears, is Central. Eufaula is no pushover, though, and if the Tigers’ high-scoring offense shows up, this game could go either way.
- When: 7 p.m. CT Friday
- Where: Eufaula, Alabama
- All-time series: Eufaula leads 16-13-3
Prediction: Glenwood 28, Escambia 24
Glenwood, last year’s Alabama Independent School Association 3A runner-up, travels to Escambia, last year’s AISA 2A runner-up this week.
The Gators made a statement last week, beating Bessemer 37-25 and avenging 2019’s state title loss. Quarterback Jackson Griner and running back Kye Robichaux combined for over 400 rushing yards and four touchdowns.
The Gators will likely lean on the duo again this week. If that works to the extent it did against Bessemer, the Gators will leave Bachelor Field with a 2-0 record Friday night.
- When: 7 p.m. CT Friday
- Where: Atmore, Alabama
- All-time series: Tied 4-4
Prediction: Gardendale 21, Smiths Station 14
Smiths Station hasn’t played a game yet due to Russell County delaying fall sports due to COVID-19. Since that game technically counted as a forfeit, the Panthers bring a 1-0 record into Friday night’s home contest against 6A Gardendale.
Gardendale, which made the second round of the state playoffs last year, has played a game: The Rockets beat 7A Sparkman 22-7 last week.
This is the first meeting between the two programs.
