High school football roundup: Northside cruises, Central wins third straight
It might be time to start taking Northside football seriously.
The Patriots, who pulled off a comeback against Columbus in Week One and lost to LaGrange by seven points on Sept. 10, routed Spencer 65-0 Friday night at Kinnett Stadium. The Patriots offense can score in bunches, and their defense showed just how dominant it can be.
Northside’s schedule gets tougher in the coming weeks, but if the Patriots play like they did Friday night, they shouldn’t worry.
Here’s how the rest of the area’s teams fared:
FINAL SCORES
- Northside 65, Spencer 0
- Callaway 17, Hardaway 6
- First Presbyterian Day 22, Brookstone 7
- Harris County 14, Upson-Lee 13
- Pacelli 48, Randolph Clay 14
- Glenwood 61, Springwood 14
- Heard County 35, Manchester 20
- Central 45, Enterprise 28
Three stars of the week
1. Malachi Hosley, sophomore, running back, Northside: Northside made easy work of Spencer, and Hosley stole the show for the Patriots.
The sophomore ran for 181 yards and three touchdowns, as the Patriots continued their hot start to 2020. He punctuated his night with a 72-yard touchdown run on the opening play of the second half.
2. Pierre Summers, senior, running back, Pacelli: Summers followed his 290-yard, five-touchdown performance on Sept. 11 against Columbus with a four-touchdown game in the Vikings’ 48-14 win over Randolph Clay Friday night
Summers, a transfer from Orlando, Florida, has registered 11 touchdowns in his first three games for Pacelli.
3. Joseph McKay, senior, running back, Central: One of Central’s top offensive threats, McKay was a driving force behind the Red Devils’ 48-25 win over Enterprise Friday.
McKay ran for 145 yards in the first half, and scored two touchdowns, including a 70-yard touchdown run in the second quarter.
Best game
Central 45, Enterprise 25
A back-and-forth game in Phenix City ended with Central notching its third consecutive win after an 0-2 start.
The Red Devils topped Enterprise 45-28, and got long touchdown runs by running back Joseph McKay (70 yards) and quarterback Trey Miles (67 yards).
Central pulled away in the second half, and now turn their sights to Opelika on Sept. 25.
What’s next?
Central at Opelika, Sept. 25, 7 p.m.: The Red Devils seem to have found a groove after losing their first two games, and enter next week’s road contest against Opelika on a roll.
Opelika enters the game 3-1, its only loss coming to Auburn.
Troup vs. Hardaway, Sept. 25, 7:30 p.m.: Hardaway, which beat Americus-Sumter by 33-3 on Sept. 10, fell to Callaway Friday night in LaGrange. The Hawks must again make the trek to Callaway Stadium next week, when they face Troup.
Hardaway enters the game coming off its first loss of the season. Troup is 0-2 and needs a win.
