Twenty-two local wrestlers qualified Saturday for the GHSA state championships, which will be held next week.
Three of the wrestlers won their weight class in sectional competition.
In the Class 5A Sectional B in Allatoona, Carver’s Brooks Alfred won in the 220-pound weight class. He defeated South Paulding’s Michael Farmer in the title match with a 5-2 decision.
In the Class 3A Sectional B in Calhoun, Spencer’s Kameron Blackshear (170) and Kendrick’s Isaiah Sellers (195) both won their weight class.
Blackshear beat Gordon Central’s Mills Benjamin with a pin just 46 seconds into the match. Sellers beat Westminster’s Ru Usey with an 18-15 decision.
In Class 3A and 5A, the top eight finishers in each weight class from the sectionals advanced to next week’s state championships.
Others advancing in 5A were:
Northside’s John Jones (106) and Carver’s Javon Walker (145) both finished third.
Columbus’ Josh McAlister (138) finished fifth and William Nana Faba (285) came in seventh.
Hardaway’s Sh’kale Barnes (113) finished sixth.
In 3A, Spencer had six other wrestlers qualify. Elijah McNickels (138) and Jeremy Burgess (152) both finished second, Jasaad Graves (220) and Chris Baker (285) both finished fourth, Bryan Williams (182) finished sixth and Isiah Arredondo (106) finished eighth.
Kendrick’s Devon Hill (120) also qualified by finishing eighth.
Jordan’s Renard Swiney (295) finished eighth.
The top four finishers in the Class A and 2A sectionals advanced.
In Class A, Brookstone’s Dre Dashiell came in second and Carlos Vizcarrando finished fourth. Pacelli’s Colin Mulvany (120) finished third and Tanner Hall (152) finished fourth.
In Class 2A, Chattahoochee County’s Isaiah Sanchez (106) finished second and Christian Afoa (195) came in third.
