Carver wrestler Brooks Alfred advances to state championship match


DECATUR, Ga. — Carver’s Brooks Alfred will wrestle for a state championship on Saturday.

Alfred pinned Cambridge’s Trey Wolfe in 4 minutes, 56 seconds in one of the Class 5A semifinals in the 220-pound weight class Friday night. Alfred, who is now 53-2 for the season, will face South Paulding’s Michael Farmer for the state title on Saturday.

Farmer is 46-2 after winning 6-5 over Heritage’s Richard Walker on Friday night.

The three local semifinalists in Class 3A all lost on Friday night.

Spencer’s Elijah Nickels (138) lost 14-2 to Morgan County’s Jody McAlister.

Nickels’ teammate, Kameron Blackshear (170), also lost his semifinal match. He lost 8-4 to Banks County’s Dylan Gouine.

Kendrick’s Isaiah Sellers (195) lost to Elbert County’s AJ Edmond 14-2.

All three will return to compete in the consolation bracket on Saturday. The worst they can finish is sixth place.

Five other local wrestlers, who lost their first match on Thursday, remained alive in the consolation brackets and will finish no worse than sixth place.

They are Pacelli’s Tanner Hall (152) and Colin Mulvany (120), Carver’s Javon Walker (145), Spencer’s Jasaad Graves (220) and Chattahoochee County’s Christian Afoa (195).

In Class 5A:

Carver’s Walker (145) beat Richmond Hill’s Akira Bechtel 15-5 and Starr’s Mills’ Michael Runyan 6-4.

Northside’s John Jones (106) beat Effingham County’s Jeremiah Addison 11-3, but then lost to Forsyth Central’s Abraham Perez in 3:15.

Columbus’ William Nana-Fabu (285) beat Evans’ Cole Norrsworthy in 2:28 and Trenelas Cradock 1-0, but then he lost 2-1 to Brandon Joseph.

Josh McAlister (138) beat Clarke Central’s Zack Chastain, but then he lost to Coffee County’s Drew Jowers 7-4.

Hardaway’s Sh’Kale Barnes (113) lost to Starr’s Mills’ Nick Martin 5-1 and Emilio Evans-Pagan (170) lost in 55 seconds to Clarke Central’s Melvin Nimely.

In Class 3A:

Spencer’s Chris Baker (285) beat Marco Brown in 2:34, but was then eliminated by Dougherty County’s Aaron Spires 3-1.

Bryan Williams (182) beat Pepperell’s Bryce Eickleberry 10-5 and Barrow County’s John Herrin 14-9, but he then lost to Noah Denard.

Jasaad Graves (220) beat Alex West in 3:30, Maurice Hayes 17-3 and Elbert County’s Ashton Gibson 11-4.

Jeremy Burgess (152) beat Bruce Burgess of Adairsville 3-2, but then lost 3-2 to Pepperell’s Jacob Smith.

Jordan’s Renard Swiney (285) lost to Jackson County’s Stephen King.

Kendrick’s Devon Hill (120) lost 18-9 to Rutland’s Michael Rucks.

Competition in Class A and 2A got underway on Friday.

In Class A:

Brookstone’s Dre Dashiell (170) lost in 1:53 to Towns County’s Daulton Rogers and 8-5 to Turner County’s Deontae Crockett. Carlos Vizcarrando (195)  lost in 1:01 to Commerce’s Dontavious Mosley and in 2:00 to St. Francis’ Stephen Agan.

Pacelli’s Tanner Hall (152) Hall lost in 2:42 to Mt. Pisgah’s Pierce Erhardt, but he bounced back to pin Calvary’s Elijah Harris in 37 seconds. Colin Mulvany (120) lost in 1:44 to Jamey Floyd of Trion, but he also stayed alive with a pin of Mount Pisgah’s Nick Coats in 3:36.

In Class 2A:

Chattahoochee County’s Isaiah Sanchez (106) lost his opening match in 2:46 to Social Circle’s Josh Engstrom and his second match to Lovett’s Robert Wilkes 9-1. Sanchez’s teammate, Christian Afoa (195), also lost in the first round in 4:48 to Model’s Dakota Willerson, but he bounced back to beat Washington-Wilkes’ Hunter Brock 5-4.
