Carver’s Brooks Alfred fell behind early and was unable to rally in losing 8-3 to South Paulding’s Michael Farmer on Saturday in the GHSA Class 5A state championship match in the 200-pound weight class.
It was a reversal of the results in the sectionals last weekend, where Alfred beat Farmer.
Alfred didn’t place last year in 5A. As a sophomore in 3A, he had a fifth-place finish.
Alfred finished this season with a 50-3 record. Farmer finished 44-2.
Eight other local wrestlers competed in consolation matches Saturday.
In Class 5A:
Carver’s Javon Walker (145) finished in sixth place as he lost to Creekview’s Evan Gianfala 10-9. He lost to Spencer Cooper in 2:28 in the consolation semifinals.
In Class 3A:
Kendrick’s Isaiah Sellers (195) finished sixth as he lost to Pierce County’s Ian Kessler 14-12. Sellers lost to Westminster’s Ru Usey 19-7 in the consolation semifinals.
Spencer’s Kameron Blackshear (170) finished in fifth as he won in a forfeit over Jefferson’s Chuck Allen. Blackshear earlier lost in 4:01 to Appling County’s Caleb Johnson.
Elijah McNickels (138) also finished in fifth. He beat Jefferson’s Coy Strong 15-13. McNickels lost to Calhoun’s Jacob Callahan 8-6 in the consolation semifinals.
Jasaad Graves came in sixth as he lost a 6-2 decision to Jefferson’s Jackson Bowen. He earlier lost to Brantley County’s Cole Lewis in 3:16.
In Class A:
Pacelli’s Colin Mulvany (120) finished in fifth place after beating Turner County’s Johnny Burgess 14-12 on Saturday. Earlier he had lost to St. Francis’ Jack Kirkpatrick 9-7 in the consolation semifinals.
Tanner Hall (152) finished in sixth place as he was pinned in 3:16 by Trion’s Andrew McGuire. Hall lost to Irwin County’s DJ Pollard 12-4 in the consolation semifinals.
In Class 2A:
Chattahoochee County’s Christian Afoa (195) finished in fourth place as he was pinned in 1:47 by Vidalia’s Devin Johnson. Afoa made the third-place match by defeating Chattooga’s Austin Jones 7-5.
The AHSAA held its sectionals on Saturday at Montgomery.
The top four in the Class 7A sectional advanced to next week’s state meet.
Central had five wrestlers qualify. Robert Morales won the sectional title at 152.
Thee other four were Studd Morris (106, fourth), Maxwell Kauffman (113, second), Jon Storey (145, second) and Jadarius Johnson (182, fourth).
Smiths Station had four qualify for the 7A meet. They were Deon Morgan (120, third), Tyler Wilson (126, fourth), Austin Phillips (182, third) and Deondrae Williams (220, fourth).
The top eight in each weight class advanced in 6A. Russell County’s Cameron Oglesby finished seventh at 106.
