Russell County opens with tough game against Tallassee

The second go-around for coach Dwight Jones at Russell County started off on a sour note Friday night as the Warriors lost to Tallassee 25-0.

The Warriors have lost 23 straight.

Key play: Trailing 3-0, Russell County drove across midfield on its first possession of the game. On third-and-12, Keyshawn Stevenson hit Corey Person for a 24-yard game to the Tiger 24-yard line. The play, with less than a minute to play in the first quarter, was as deep into Tallassee territory that they would penetrate.

Key players: Russell County had great defensive effort the entire game and had big plays from Simeon Hill with three tackles for loss and Jamorris Thomas with 2 TFL.

Key individual stats: Stevenson threw for 67 yards on 5-of-9 passing with one interception. Tyrelle Anthony led Russell County in rushing with 26 yards on 5 carries. Jalen Mitchell had 24 yards on 7 carries.

Coach quote: “I don’t think we gave up,” Russell County coach Dwight Jones said. “We shot ourselves in the foot offensively. Defensively we gave up some big plays we can’t give up. We’ve just got to grow up, Tallassee has a good football team. They are normally in the state playoffs every year.”
