Site for Columbus minor league baseball team’s new name reveal and free concert is moved
Eight months after the deal was finalized to move the Atlanta Braves’ Double-A Minor League Baseball affiliate from Mississippi to Columbus, the franchise owner is set to reveal the team’s new name, colors, logo and mascot.
New York-based Diamond Baseball Holdings, which owns and operates 34 minor league teams, including all the Braves affiliates, is scheduled to announce the news Friday at 7:15 p.m., during the first edition of this season’s Uptown Columbus Friday Night Concert Series.
Due to the weather forecast for rainy weather, the event has been moved from the outdoor stage in the 1000 block of Broadway.to inside the South Hall at the Columbus Convention and Trade Center, 801 Front Ave. Admission is free.
“We are incredibly excited to be partnering with Uptown Columbus on this historic event in Columbus baseball history,” Pete Laven, the team’s general manager, said in a news release. “We know anticipation is high, and we look forward to revealing the brand-new team identity to the community in a fun, festive atmosphere.”
Staff will be on site to sell team swag for fans to gear up in time for the 2025 Southern League season, which will start in April at Synovus Park, the city’s historic baseball stadium previously named Golden Park.
The concert will start at 5:30 p.m. with the Tommy Prine Band, followed by Homegrown, the Zac Brown Band Experience, at 8 p.m. Then, at 10 p.m., the Sky Elements Drone Show will feature 150 drones in a 12-minute overhead light display depicting baseball animations, shapes and patterns.
For event safety, the 1000 block of Broadway will close at 4:30 p.m., and the 900 block of Broadway, plus 10th Street from Front Avenue to First Avenue, will be closed from 9-10:30 p.m. Those roads will reopen after the event.
