Columbus Clingstones will soon debut at Synovus Park. See inside the new-look stadium
The sounds of hammers, drills and saws could be heard throughout Synovus Park Tuesday as construction workers readied the park for the upcoming Columbus Clingstones season.
The stadium underwent a $50 million renovation by construction company Brasfield & Gorrie, which appeared to be near completion Tuesday ahead of the team’s first home game in a couple weeks. The stadium will not be completely done before opening day, but it will be ready to host the team and fans, according to Jack Johnson, the team’s manager for broadcasting and public relations.
“Work will still be ongoing past the first week of games on some minor aspects of the ballpark, but it will be ready for Opening Night,” Johnson said.
What used to be Golden Park, a place with an old-school “take me out to the ballgame” feel, now features a more modern venue. Large glass windows reminiscent of New York high-rises can be seen throughout the stadium.
The seats behind home plate feature a mesh-like design that will be good for warm southern summer days. Green hard-back seats fill the rest of the stadium. Balconies can be seen from boxes above the seats behind home plate.
A gift shop selling Columbus Clingstones merchandise sits toward the end of the stadium on the right field side.
Padded green walls span the perimeter of the field. “Home of Clingstones Baseball” can be seen on top of the green dugouts.
Underneath the stands on the right-field side of the stadium sits a market-style concession stand reading “Bullpen Burger Co.” The concession stand had multiple kiosks allowing for a grab-and-go concept that should streamline the process of grabbing snacks and beer in-between innings.
A new scoreboard, much larger than the old, sits behind the fence in left field.
A handful of players on the Clingstones’ inaugural roster said they were impressed with the ballpark they’ll call home this season.
“The field, the clubhouse, and everything, I mean it’s about as good as you can get for Double-A, even some of the Triple-A ball parks,” pitcher Hayden Harris said.
Pitcher Drue Hackenberg said the lockers are nice, and said the stadium feels “homey” and “comfortable.”
The Clingstones are scheduled to have their first home game on April 15 against the Pensacola Blue Wahoos. The team is set to celebrate the first home game with fireworks and commemorative tickets for a limited number of attendees.
The Clingstones will have their first game of the season Friday in Montgomery against the Biscuits.
