Funeral arrangements are set to celebrate life of ex-Central star Larry Florence
The funeral arrangements to celebrate the life of former Central High School basketball star Larry Florence are set.
Florence battled cancer for a decade before dying July 5 at Piedmont Columbus Regional’s midtown hospital. He was 49.
The funeral service will be July 19, starting at 11 a.m., in Christ Community Church, 4078 Milgen Road, in Columbus, according to his obituary. The public viewing will be July 18, from noon to 5 p.m., including a family hour from noon to 1 p.m., in Taylor Funeral Home at 1514 Fifth Ave. in Phenix City.
After averaging 19 points and 13 rebounds per game in 1995-96 as a senior at Central High School in Phenix City, Florence was a four-year starter at the University of Nebraska and finished 14th on the program’s all-time scoring list (1,233 points).
Florence was named team captain and was an honorable-mention for the All-Big 12 in 2000. He played professionally for eight years in seven foreign countries before returning home to Phenix City as a youth coach in the Columbus area.
