Sports Briefs: American remains unbeaten in 9-10 state tourney

Columbus American improved to 3-0 in pool play with a 14-13 victory over Cartersville on Monday in the Little League 9-10 baseball state tournament.

American scored four runs in bottom of sixth inning.

Camden Mathis had the walk-off hit.

Chantler Valero was the winning pitcher. Leading hitters were Bo Voltz (3-for-3), Chris Wright (2-for-3) and Trey Lingo (2-3).

American plays its final pool play game today at 7 p.m. against Masters City.

American drops first game in 9-10 tourney

GRIFFIN, Ga. — Columbus American lost 5-4 to Athens on Monday in the Little League 10-11 baseball state tournament.

No other details of the game were available.

American is now 1-1 in pool play. American and Warner Robins will play tonight 6 to complete a game that was suspended due to rain on Saturday. American led 15-6 in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Phenix City remains alive in state event

SCOTTSBORO, Ala. — Phenix City’s 14-year-old Dixie Boys team beat Daphne 13-2 in the state tournament Monday.

Phenix City scored 10 runs in the first inning as 15 men went to the plate.

The leading hitters were Logan Kiker 3-for-3, Blake Johnson 3-for-3 (double) and Christian Wiggs 2-for-3 (double).

Anfernee Grier was the winning pitcher.

Phenix City advanced to play Chil-Tauga late Monday.

Phenix City lost 15-0 in five innings to Cherokee County in a game that was played late Sunday night.

The leading hitters for Phenix City were Tanner Knowles 4-for-4 (double), Trevor Davis 3-for-3, (double, homer), Christian Wiggs 2-for-2 (double) and Kiker 2-for-3.

Harris County wins softball state title

It has been a mixed bag of results for the District 8 softball all-stars playing in various state tournaments.

The Harris County 10-11 team won the state title with a 15-14 and 10-5 sweep of Elbert County. There were only two teams in that tournament.

The Columbus Northern 11-12 team was eliminated Monday in Elberton with a 2-1 loss to Baldwin. Northern lost 10-0 to Warner Robins in its first game on Sunday.

The Columbus Pioneer 9-10 team lost 3-2 to Warner Robins on Sunday. Pioneer was scheduled to play Hart County on Monday. No score was available.

In the Junior tournament at Northern, Columbus Northern lost Warner Robins 12-2 in an elimination game Monday night. Warner Robins will play Bartow tonight at 6 for the state title. Warner Robins will need to beat Bartow twice to win the state championship.

In the Senior tournament at Northern, Columbus Northern beat Madison County 4-3 in an elimination game Monday night. Northern will play West Point tonight at 6 for the state title. Northern will need to beat Madison County twice to win the state championship.

Columbus wins Babe Ruth state title

The Columbus Babe Ruth 14-year-olds team won the state championship Saturday with a 15-10 win over Harris County.

Blake Meadows hit a home run. He was also the winning pitcher.

Columbus also beat Harris County 17-7 in the best-of-three opener on Friday. Justin Harrison went 5-for-5 with three doubles.

Harris County won the first game Saturday, forcing a third-and-deciding game.

Columbus advanced to the Southeast Regional, which will be played in Demopolis, Ala., starting on Aug. 5.

Pioneer to hold fall registration

Pioneer Little League will hold open registration for its fall baseball and softball leagues. It is open to all area 5-12 year olds.

Registration will take place 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Aug. 7 and 14 and 2-4 p.m. Aug. 8 and 15. All teams are subject to Board approval. For more information, go to pioneerlittleleague.org or call Rick Chadwick at 706-570-5100.
