The SPHL announced its All-Rookie team today and the Snakes were well represented:
2011-2012 SPHL All-Rookie Team
F - Jordan Chong, Pensacola Ice Flyers (56 gp, 21-33-54, 9 ppg, 3 gwg)
F - Brayden Metz, Louisiana IceGators (56 gp, 23-33-56, 14 ppg)
F - Greg Beller, Columbus Cottonmouths (34 gp, 16-20-36, +17)
D - Andrew Krelove, Columbus Cottonmouths (54 gp, 8-16-24, 4 ppg, 3 gwg)
D - James Isaacs, Mississippi Surge (56 gp, 8-12-20, +13, 4 ppg, 3 gwg)
G - Kiefer Smiley, Mississippi Surge (19-10-2, 2.49 gaa, .907 save%, 2 shutouts)
The release sent out the cold, hard stats listed above, but it was also good to see that the league noted Greg's overcoming adversity to have a terrific season. Remember, his first stint as a Snake lasted 21 minutes. Before he could return to action, his broken jaw had to heal and now he wears a special double visor to protect his face. He still managed to score more than a point a game. Congrats, Greg!
Andrew came in as a rookie to a formidable, experienced defense and fit right in. After Jerome stopped tinkering with the defensive partners, Andrew ended up paired with Kevin Kessler and the duo was very successful. Andrew did the shooting and scoring, Kevin did the hitting. A great match. Good job, Andrew!!
Next up as the league's awards week continues: All-SPHL First Team and Second Team. The Snakes should certainly be well represented on both of these lists.
Coaches and select media members get to vote on these honors, but none of us can vote for the team we coach or cover...which I hate..haha. Greg and Andrew didn't get my vote, but not because both weren't absolutely deserving of it!!
