Gus Malzahn updates injuries after A-Day scrimmage
The spring season has been a problematic one for Auburn, as injuries have hampered several Tigers throughout spring practice. That much was clear after Auburn’s A-Day scrimmage, as head coach Gus Malzahn had a number of injuries to update.
Malzahn answered questions from the media about several players’ statuses going forward. Malzahn said defensive back Jeremiah Dinson had “a little shoulder issue,” though Malzahn did not know how serious it was. Fellow defensive back Jordyn Peters tweaked his ankle in Saturday’s scrimmage and left, but Malzahn said he thinks the freshman will be OK.
One of the scariest moments of A-Day came when offensive lineman Brodarious Hamm went down on the field before limping off gingerly with the help of Auburn trainers. According to Malzahn, Hamm’s injury may not be as bad as first expected.
“Brodarius, he had a scare with his knee,” Malzahn said. “He was walking around right now. We’ll see how that is.”
Malzahn and the coaching staff took a safe approach with several other players who were held out of the A-Day game. Wide receiver Ryan Davis did not play due to a lingering hamstring issue, which was the same situation for running back Kam Martin. With both players, Malzahn emphasized that the coaches know what they’re getting from both players and therefore should not risk causing further problems.
H-back Chandler Cox also did not play in the scrimmage, but Malzahn said that was not injury related.
“Chandler Cox, really there wasn’t anything wrong with him at all,” Malzahn said. “He’s a three-year starter. He’s got more experience at that position that anybody we’ve ever had, so we wanted to give those other guys opportunities to show what they can do, especially with the 1s.”
The Tigers officially end spring practice on Tuesday. Even though the spring has not gone as planned with injuries as well as Jarrett Stidham being limited, Malzahn said for the most part it was still a useful time for the team. The major issue, Malzahn said, was really the loss of Will Hastings and Eli Stove.
“Obviously the two receivers we had with ACL (injuries), that was a tough deal,” Malzahn said. “We’ve just got to have other guys step up. It gives some of the other guys opportunities.”
