TSYS program awards $126,100 to 75 ‘future scholars’
It’s an annual effort to help fund the educations of children whose parents work at TSYS, the global credit-card and payment processor headquartered in downtown Columbus.
This year, the TSYS Future Scholars Foundation Inc. has raised $126,100 that will go to 75 students, with 52 of the recipients living in the Chattahoochee Valley area in and around Columbus.
The money comes from donations by employees and “friends” of TSYS, the company said, with various fund-raisers and corporate-led activities bringing in the cash that has added up since the program’s inception in 2008. To date, $762,750 has been awarded to 515 scholarship recipients.
“The scholarship is designed to reward well-rounded students who strive for high academic achievement, devote time to worthwhile extracurricular activities and are involved in meaningful community service,” the company said.
Criteria for receiving money from the TSYS Future Scholars Foundation includes leadership, awards and honors, community service, involvement in activities, career goals and academic ability, said the foundation, which named Adam Collins of Aurora, Colo., son of TSYS employee Jeff Collins, the recipient of the Richard W. Ussery Scholar honor for 2016. Ussery is the retired and first chairman and chief executive officer of TSYS.
