The employees of Synovus Financial Corp. have once again given to their own through the Jack B. Parker Scholarship Foundation.

The company, headquartered in Columbus and parent firm of Columbus Bank and Trust, said 90 scholarships are being awarded to children of workers across the five states it operates in the Southeast.

A total of $104,000 was raised this year via individual donations and a variety of fund-raising activities by employees and their families. Since the annual effort was started in 1988, the foundation has raised more than $2 million for education.

This year, 41 of the 90 students receiving money are from the Chattahoochee Valley area. Synovus operates banks in Georgia, Alabama, Florida, South Carolina and Tennessee, overseeing about $29 billion in assets.

The scholarships go to those students furthering their educations in college and technical/vocational schools. Criteria include academic excellence, showing leadership skills and volunteering within the communities in which they live.

The program is named in memory of the late Jack B. Parker, an executive who spent 44 years with Synovus and Columbus Bank and Trust. “Jack’s enthusiastic attitude, keen sense of duty and good heart were evident throughout his career,” the company said.
