Facebook group plans to just point fans at Irma to ‘blow it away’

A Facebook group has a plan to stop Hurricane Irma in its tracks Thursday.

More than 50,000 people (and another 41,000 “interested” people) are planning to simply “take their fans outside and point them at Hurricane Irma to blow it away from us.”

The event is scheduled to take place Thursday, September 7 at 12 p.m across the U.S. Attendees don’t necessarily need to use fans, either.

“Air compressors with a blow gun attachment also a plus, or anything else. Get creative. Not responsible for any collapsed lungs should you choose to blow manually.”

Another group plans to hold a “protest” on the beach Friday to convince the hurricane to turn around.

The groups are lighthearted attempts at eking some humor out of a grim hurricane season, in which Hurricane Harvey killed more than 60 people and devastated parts of Texas, while another ominous storm looms in the Caribbean.

Hurricane Irma is now the strongest hurricane ever recorded in the Atlantic, and projections show a reasonably strong likelihood of the storm eventually making landfall near Florida and the east coast. Mandatory evacuations have begun in parts of Florida, and the entire state (as well as Puerto Rico) has been under a state of emergency since Monday.

Tropical Storm Jose formed in Irma’s wake, and is still relatively weak, but that could change, as the hurricane season is still active until roughly the end of November.

Georgia insurance commissioner Ralph Hudgens urged Georgian to begin planning now for the possibility of Hurricane Irma striking Georgia, as some models predict.
