Woman found shot to death at Phenix City apartment

A woman was found shot to death Tuesday inside the Gardens Apartments in Phenix City after police were called about gunshots, police said.

The name of the victim, who was in her late 50s, wasn’t released late Tuesday because her relatives haven’t been notified, said Russell County Coroner Arthur Sumbry Jr. She was pronounced dead at 3:10 p.m. of multiple gunshot wounds.

Her body will be sent to the Department of Forensic Sciences in Montgomery today for an autopsy, the coroner said.

The shooting at 3300 Stadium Drive is being investigated as a homicide, Police Capt. George Staudinger said in a release. Police were called to the complex at 12:35 p.m. to check on gunshots.

A gated apartment complex, the Gardens is described as a luxury apartment complex offering one to three bedrooms in an area near shopping and U.S. 80 off of Summerville Road in north Phenix City.

The woman is the seventh homicide in Phenix City for the year. Michael Clark, 40, of Columbus was shot to death on July 25 on Setter Drive.

No other details were available and the case remains under investigation.
