Muscogee County sheriff’s deputies save woman, dogs from house fire
Two deputies with the Muscogee County Sheriff’s Office rescued a woman and two dogs from a burning house, Sheriff John Darr announced Wednesday in a news release.
Darr said deputies Ryan Early and Christopher Toelle were patrolling an area of Crystal Drive around 3:40 p.m. Sunday when they saw a large amount of smoke coming from a mobile home. They approached the residence and noticed a fire toward the back.
After calling Columbus Fire & EMS to the scene, they entered the home to see if anyone was inside. They found a woman and brought her to safety before entering the home again to save two small dogs.
Firefighters arrived on the scene to extinguish the flames, but the woman’s home was severely damaged, Darr said. Officials contacted the American Red Cross and the woman’s next of kin to make sure she had a place to stay.
In the release, Darr thanked the deputies and the fire officials for their efforts.
“I would like to commend deputy Early and deputy Toelle on their quick response time and actions,” Darr wrote. “They prevented a very serious tragedy from occurring and acted courageously without regard to their own safety or well-being.”
