Planet Fitness staff , patrons free woman pinned beneath car’s bumper

A Seale, Ala., woman landed on the hood of a 2014 Ford Fusion before she was run over in the parking lot of Planet Fitness Thursday afternoon, Columbus police said Friday.

The 53-year-old woman was treated at Midtown Medical Center for non-life threatening bruises, cuts and a bump on her head after the 6:40 p.m. crash at 4519 Woodruff Farm Road.

In a report, police said the victim was walking to her car in the south end of the parking lot when she saw the vehicle coming toward her but assumed the driver of the white Ford would see her. The pedestrian was struck by Glady Green with the front of the car and the victim ended up beneath the front bumper.

One of about six witnesses to the crash ran into the fitness center and rounded up several people to help lift the car while a second person freed the victim from beneath the bumper. A witness said staff from the center and other patrons were able to lift the car off the ground and free the struck pedestrian.

A second witness said it took about a minute or so to free the woman who had just worked out at the fitness center. About four people lifted up the front of the car and rolled it back from the woman. “She was in some pain,” the witness said.

Green, 83, of Columbus told police she turned in the parking lot and felt her car hit something. She stopped, stepped from the car and saw the pedestrian under the bumper.

No charges have been filed in connection with the crash.
