Benning soldier killed during weekend dispute had several awards, decorations

Fort Benning extended its condolences on Tuesday to the friends and family of specialist Donald Obrent Matthews who was killed July 22 near the intersection of Veterans Parkway and River Road.

27-year-old Marcus Theodore Wiggins has been charged with murder the shooting death of Matthews.

A news release from Benning says Matthews from Tifton, Ga., was assigned to Headquarters Company 2nd Battalion, 11th Infanty Regiment.

A human resources specialist, Matthews, 26, joined the Army in 2012 and was deployed to Afghanistan from June 2013- March 2014.

According to Fort Benning, his awards and decorations included: Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Meritorious Unit Citation, Good Conduct Medal, Global War on Terrorism Medal, Army Service Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, and the Afghanistan Campaign Medal with Campaign Star.
