Woman killed during Sunday night drive-by shooting on Ewart Avenue
Columbus Police are investigating a Labor Day Weekend homicide that happened late Sunday night in the 900 block of Ewart Avenue.
Police were called about 10 p.m. and found 19-year-old Takelia Johnson suffering from a gunshot wound. She died from the injuries.
This is the 22nd homicide in Columbus this year, according to police.
Witnesses told police that Johnson was the victim of a drive-by shooting, according to a news release from police early Monday morning.
“Investigators were informed that a vehicle with two to three males inside began shooting as it drove down Ewart Avenue,” the release from Lt. Greg Touchberry said.
On Monday morning, one witness, who declined to give his name, said the woman was in a group of three people which included a man and another woman when she was shot. They were standing on Ewart Avenue in front of a small city park at the time of the shooting, the man said.
Johnson was pronounced dead at 10:58 p.m. Sunday on the scene by Deputy Coroner Charles Newton. She had a single gunshot wound to the chest, Newton said.
Johnson was on a front porch at the time she was pronounced dead, Newton said.
“Someone carried her from the street to that porch,” the deputy coroner said.
The vehicle was last seen heading south on Ewart Avenue, which is off Buena Vista Road between Brown Avenue and Lawyers Lane. The shooting happened about a block from Buena Vista Road.
Police are asking anyone with information on the shooting death to call Sgt. Mike Dahnke at 706-225-4296 or email him at mdahnke@columbusga.org.
