More than 1,700 inmates return to prison in Savannah after storm

A total of 1,701 inmates returned to Coastal State Prison in Savannah, Ga., Thursday.

According to a story on the website of the Georgia Department of Corrections, those prisoners had been evacuated to other facilities across Georgia for safety from Hurricane Irma.

Also returning were 252 residents housed at Coastal Transitional Center in Savannah.

The report says that during the storm, 31 state facilities lost power but successfully ran off pre-staged generators with no interference to daily operations.

In the aftermath of the storm, the Georgia Department of Corrections has initiated recovery operations at affected facilities. Both staff and inmate crews have been continuously responding to debris removal requests and other relief efforts statewide.
